Joseph Pilates, the founder of The Pilates Method, defined the 3 guiding principles of pilates as:

  1. Whole body health

  2. Whole body commitment

  3. Breath

    If you’ve ever worked with us before, you know we talk about breath with just about everything we do.  Today’s blog will dive into the “whole body health” principle in more detail.  Joseph Pilates wrote in one of his books that Whole Body Health could be achieved through exercise, proper diet, sufficient sleep, good hygiene, plenty of sunshine and fresh air, and a balance in life of work, recreation and relaxation. Doesn’t that sound lovely? And seemingly simple- yet we all struggle with finding this balance!

Proper Diet: Nutrition + Fueling Your Body

A well-balanced diet forms the cornerstone of good health. It provides the essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals our bodies need to function optimally and support our movement.   • Our staff all enjoys LMNT packets (best when combined with Chipotle… says Andrea), to help support healthy mineral balance after exercise. You can find these in the studio in many different flavors.

Sufficient Sleep: Recharge + Revitalize

Adequate, quality sleep is fundamental to overall health. It allows our bodies to recover, regenerate, and consolidate memories. Establishing a regular sleep routine and creating a conducive sleep environment contribute to better mental clarity, enhanced mood, and improved physical performance.  

  • Tape Your Way to Better Sleep: Allie practices nasal breathing by taping her mouth shut at night, inspired by the book "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker. This ensures high-quality rest, especially crucial as a new mom.

A Balance in Life of Work, Recreation + Relaxation: Mental + Emotional Well-Being

Just as crucial as physical health, mental well-being encompasses practices like meditation, mindfulness, and regular self-reflection. These practices reduce stress, enhance cognitive function, and build emotional resilience. Cultivating positive relationships and seeking professional help when needed are vital components of mental well-being.

  • Gratitude: Andrea practices journaling in the morning to focus her energy + practice gratitude.

Chronic stress can take a toll on both our physical and mental health. Engaging in stress-reducing activities like yoga, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature helps maintain a healthy balance. Prioritizing relaxation techniques empowers us to face challenges with a clear mind and a steady heart.

Social Connection: Fostering Relationships

We couldn’t resist adding in one more of our own.  In a world that is increasingly spent behind screens, the power of human connection is sometimes lost. Engaging with friends, family, and communities provides emotional support, reduces feelings of isolation, and promotes a sense of belonging. Nurturing healthy relationships enhances our overall quality of life.  We hope to foster these relationships with you in the studio, and that you may even take the time to enjoy a coffee or kombucha, on us, after your session with fellow clients.

  • Christina makes sure to stay involved in her children’s school every Friday. She is also hosting a block party to be able to connect with her neighbors and foster community.

  • Andrea makes a point to talk with friends on the phone instead of texting at least once a week.
